Last Friday and Saturday night we spent some time in our storm shelter. Although it is not relaxing, it definitely forces us into slow down mode, as I cannot be cleaning house, doing laundry etc while also making sure we are all safe. We have a space under our stairs and entry way closet which is used for storage. But in the summer it also doubles as our storm shelter. It is a relatively big space for a shelter, and the boys can lay down on sleeping bags in there as well. We do spend some time rounding up various items. We have water, we get the laptops, the ipad, the phones, the weather radio. We also have the boys, the snake, the lizard, the bird, the dogs. It makes for some interesting coziness ;).
Luckily, we only lost a couple of baby tree branches, so everything could have been much much worse and we are grateful. Although I do look forward to peaceful evenings this summer that we can actually spend outside as a family!
As we post many of our pics on facebook now, I will need to figure out how to post those pictures here :)

"This is suck"
First a note: we discourage the use of suck in our house, but apparently Garek was in dire straights today.
It is interesting to watch as the boys master the skills of social networking in the neighborhood and also realizing that the day does not always go as planned. Today Garek was hopeful the next door neighbors would be able to play with him, but then they were eating lunch, then he had to eat lunch, then they had company. His response was to come into my office and tell me "This is suck." It was hard to not crack a smile as his life was unbearable for the moment. He then stomped off into his room and is digging into the lego box. (Likely he will come up with a creative structure in his despair).
We are truly blessed that the biggest problem in his young life is that he was having trouble coordinating play schedules today.

A productive weekend...
And hopefully it bodes well for the upcoming week! First I have to say that Matt is absolutely fabulous! I was having a hard time concentrating on dissertation work on the weekends because of the many home distractions...boys, cleaning etc. I felt torn about wanting to spend time with the family, doing household chores, and also working on that big giant project- my dissertation. Matt has helped me come up with a great solution, which gives him more work- thanks Honey! On Friday evenings, the boys chill with us, and then on Saturdays until about 2 PM or so, Matt has been wrangling the boys in household chores so that I can go off to a coffee shop or the library to do dissertation work. I leave here around 8, and that gives me 6 solid hours of work (plus the couple hours each evening). Then when I come home, I feel like I can "afford" some cleaning time (I do still do some of the cleaning too) and some relaxation time with the family. This weekend we were able to clean, watch a movie, play a game, give the dogs a bath, and I even did taxes. All of this was on Saturday! I felt very productive, and now as I get ready to finish up my Sunday chores (grocery shopping, laundry, hair cuts, oil change, etc) I am pleased to say, I feel I am ready for the week ahead. It is amazing how much more manageable the oncoming work week feels when I have had a chance to check multiple tasks off my list. I could not do this without my hubby! My EdD will only be made possible by my family help!

Half our life!
Matt and I have noticed that on Facebook people are posting couple pictures in honor of Valentine's Day. Although we do not change our profile pictures, I put a message on his wall I thought I would share. We started dating in the fall of of 1992. Therefore we started dating over 17 years ago! I am currently 34, therefore I have been in love with my husband for half my life! How crazy is that?! From now on I can say that I have loved him most of my life and truly mean it! Of course Matt is younger than I am, so he can say he has loved me for more of his life- haha.
We must take a moment to acknowledge how blessed we are that we met our true loves at such an early age and that we have continued to grow in love and friendship. We are blessed with our 2 boys, extended family and friends.

Our new Nephew/ Cousin
I thought I should try and squeeze in at least one entry before the first month of the year disappears!
On January 8, 2010 Andee and Bryan became parents of our newest Nephew, Lucas Bryan. I had the priviledge to go and see him in the hospital! He is absolutely darling! Due to the rules at the hospital, Gavin and Garek did not have the opportunity to meet him until a week later, but they are certainly facinated by their newest cousin. Being the fourth cousin of their, it is not new to have a new baby in teh family, but they are finally getting to ages where they are able to hold him without us worry he will be dropped, and they are facinated by how little he is.
We are blessed to have another little one in the family and also fall in love with! It seems miraculous that more family members are added and we still have more love to share will not deminishing the love for the current family members. As our extended family grows, so does the love!
We were lucky enough to see Lucas again today and it surprises me how fast they grow! (You would think as parents of a 6 and 9 year old that Matt and I would remember how fast they grow!).
